Economic historian
Joseph Francis
Joseph Francis is an economic historian who argues that the widely accepted "China shock" account of American deindustrialization is much weaker than commonly assumed. He joins EconTalk to explain how a 2022 correction to the underlying paper's research design halved its estimate of lost jobs and eliminated its findings on wages and living standards. His critique is as much about the incentives and review practices of the economics profession as about the trade data itself.
