Eugene B. Sledge

Eugene B. Sledge was a U.S. Marine who fought in the Pacific during World War II at Peleliu and Okinawa. After the war he became a biology professor. His memoir With the Old Breed is widely considered one of the greatest war memoirs ever written, praised for its unflinching, visceral depiction of combat. He passed away in 2001.
