Aphra Behn
Widely regarded as the first professional woman writer in English literature (1640-1689). She supported herself through her plays, poetry and fiction during the Restoration. Her best-known works include the play The Rover and the novel Oroonoko, which draws on possible early experience in Surinam. She also worked as a spy for Charles II.
